September "Recipe of the Month" (ADL-Activity of Daily Living Skills)

Remember that Cooking in the Classroom allows for many mathematical concepts--counting, fractions, etc.  Preparing the recipe addresses many ADL skills-wash and drying hands, cutting skills and food preparation.  The reward is in the eating!

APPLESAUCES



Old-Fashioned Applesauce

Foods Needed:

4 Apples
1 cup Water
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon (or small package red hots)

Equipment Needed:

Apple peeler
Knife
Cutting board
4 quart saucepan with lid
Potholder
Measuring spoons
Measuring cups
Long handled spoon ladle
Potato masher or food mill

Directions:

1.  Wash and dry hands.
2.  Wash and dry apples.
3.  Peel, core and slice apples.
4.  Put apples water, cinnamon and sugar in pot.
5.  Bring ingredients to a boil. reduce heat and simmer 8-10 minutes, until apples are tender (stir occasionally).
6.  Mash or put through a food mill.
Serve warm or cool. Makes 4 servings.

*This can be made in a crock pot. Start it first thing in the morning and cook it all day.   The smells of apples and cinnamon wefting through the hallways all day as the apples cook, will have all the other students and teachers salivating at your door!


No Cook Applesauce

Foods Needed:
4 apples
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup sugar
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 tablespoon cinnamon red hot candies

Equipment needed:

Apple peeler
Knife
Cutting board
Measuring cups
Measuring spoons
Serving spoon
Blender

Directions:

1.  Wash and dry hands
2.  Wash and dry apples.
3.  Peel, core and cube apples.
4.  Put apples, water and lemon juice in blender container-blend.
5.  Add sugar and candies to blender container-blend until smooth.
6.  Serves 4.
