October 2009- Craft of the Month- Scarecrow Theme

We really had a lot of fun making this month's craft as you can tell by the sequencing pictures. The kids will love this, particularly shaking the paint up and watching it coat the inside of the bottle!

Materials Needed:

Small Aqua Pod bottles (empty)
Orange paint
Googly eyes
Foam craft sheets or construction paper
Markers
Strands of yarn
Tacky glue
Scissors
Crepe Paper
Pipe cleaners or fall leaf wire

Directions:

Pour a small amount of paint into the empty pod and seal tightly.
Have the child shake the pod until the paint coats the entire inside orange.
Take a few strands of yarn and tie around the cap for hair.
Glue googly eyes on the pod.
Glue craft foam or construction paper shape on for nose. (Or draw on with markers).
Draw a mouth on the scarecrow. (Or cut shapes and glue on).
Cut a circle out of a square of crepe paper and pull it down around the cap.
Secure the crepe paper hat with the pipe cleaner or fall leaf wire.
Show off your new scarecrow decoration.

This craft is great for bilateral motor coordination.  It also gives a child a chance to use a little gross motor coordination while shaking the pod to distribute the paint.  This craft also gives the child a chance to discover what it is like to draw on something other than a flat surface!
