March 2010 Recipe of the Month Doctor's Day Theme

Since we are celebrating Doctor's Day (March 30, 2010) we will start with our Apple a Day (Keeps the Doctor Away) recipe that the children will love making!
Remember to check out our products under  Community Helpers, for some great Doctor items!

Microwaveable Apple A Day

Ingredients:

6 apples (washed and dried)
6  Popsicle Sticks/ markers
1 package (14 ounces) wrapped caramels
2 Tablespoon Milk
Sprinkles or other candies that look like pills

Utensils Needed:

Microwave Bowl
Spatula to stir
Plate
Waxed Paper
Pot Holder
Microwave

Directions:
Take the markers and mark the Popsicle stick to look like a thermometer.
Wash and dry hands.
Unwrap the caramels and place them in the microwave safe bowl.
Add the milk to the bowl and microwave on high for 2 minutes, stirring after first minute.
Let stand 1minute and then stir until well blended.
Stick the "thermometer" into the apple.
Swirl the apple in the caramel, holding by the stick.
Sprinkle with "pills".
Place the finished apple on waxed paper (on plate) and place in refrigerator 10-15 minutes for caramel to set up.

*For a "no cook" Apple a Day, just give each child a plastic knife and have them spread Nutella over their apple on the thermometer stick.  Sprinkle on the non-peril candies and place on waxed paper and put in the refrigerator just to set up the Nutella.

Edible Thermometers

Ingredients:

Pretzel Rods
Red or Orange Melting Candy Wafers
White Melting Candy Wafers
Optional- red colored sugar glitter

Utensils Needed

Waxed Paper
Microwave Bowl
Spatula
Plastic Knife
Snack size zip lock bag
Scissors

Directions:

Wash and dry hands.
Place the red/orange wafers in the microwaveable bowl and microwave as directed.
Stir the wafers until melted.
Dip one end of the pretzels into the melted colored candy and place on waxed paper to set up.
Using the knife, drag a little of the colored candy up a portion of the pretzel to look like rising mercury.
Sprinkle on sugar glitter if desired.
Put a few of the white wafers in the zip lock bag (leaving unsealed) and microwave until malleable.
Seal the bag and knead until melted.
Cut a tip off the corner of the bag and squeeze lines across the pretzel at various intervals to look like the temperature marks on a thermometer.
Let cool until candy is firm.

These will be the tastiest thermometers one has ever put into their mouth.
