June 2010- Craft of the Month-Rose Month Theme
June is ROSE MONTH, so lets get started with some rosy crafts the children will enjoy making!
Edible Rose Bud

Materials Needed:
2 Hershey Kisses
Red Plastic Wrap
Toothpick
Floral tape in green
Glue stick
Directions:
Put the two Kisses flat sides together, secure with a little glue from the glue stick.
Take a small square of the red plastic wrap and wrap it tight around the two Kisses.
Stick the toothpick into the tip of the bottom Kiss where the twist of the plastic wrap is bunched together.
Wrap the floral tape around the toothpick and plastic wrap and then continue to spiral the floral tape down to the end of the toothpick.
* You can make longer stemmed roses by using wooden skewers in place of the toothpicks.
Lace Rosebud Pen/Pencil

Materials Needed:
Green Pen or Pencil
Scissors
12" piece of lace
Floral tape
Glue
Silk leaves (optional)
Directions:
Take the lace piece and run the glue along the stitched end of the lace.
Roll around the top of the pen or pencil (fairly tight).
Cut off a 12"piece of floral tape and wrap the bud where the glue has connected it to the pen/pencil.
Wrap in a spiral down about 1 inch to secure the bud to the writing utensil.
If adding leaves, secure them to the pen/pencil as you wrap the floral tape.
These are great bilateral motor control activities. They also works on pincher grasp. The crafts are a great way to use up those small pieces of lace that are left over from sewing projects, or small pieces of plastic wrap. Making either craft gives the child something to give their caregiver to welcome summer!
