July 2008-  Summer Fruits- Vase of Fruit Flowers

We are sure the children have all seen the ads for the edible arrangements (that cost $$$$$).  These are not only easy to make, but a lot of fun, AND nutritious to eat.

Ingredients Needed:

Assorted summer fruits--strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, cantaloupe, watermelon, kiwi,
grapes, pineapple, etc.

Utensils Needed:

Vase
Wooden Skewers
Cutting board
melon baller
Knife
Flower shape cookie cutter

Directions:

1.  Wash and dry hands.
2.  Wash fruit and cut  large fruit into sections.
3.  Using the baller, ball pieces of watermelon and cantaloupe.
4.  Slice kiwis, and strawberries into rounds.
6.  Use the cookie cutter to cut out watermelon, cantaloupe or pineapple flowers.
7.  Stack several fruit pieces on the end of a wooden skewer to look like a flower or flower stalk.
8.  Arrange stacked "flowers" in a vase and serve. (allow 5-7 skewers per child).

This is a cool and refreshing treat for those hot summer days!

* If you are teaching shapes, this works well with cutting the fruit in cubes or trianges, and the balls are circles, and you have the child stack according to shape.
