July 2007- Recipe of the Month- Firecracker Kabobs

Ingredients Needed:

Banana slices (about 3/4"-1" thick) * dipped in lemon or orange juice to keep from darkening.
Red Fruits---Strawberries,Watermelon balls,Whole pitted Cherries, whole Raspberries
Marshmallow Fluff
Star Sprinkles (or red, white and blue jimmies)

Equipment needed:

Knife to cut fruit
spoon for fluff
small dishes to hold fruit and stars
skewers- wooden or metal
plate to serve firecrackers on

Directions:

1.  Wash and dry hands.
2.  Thread a banana slice onto a skewer.
3.  Now tread a red fruit onto the skewer, pushing the fruit along the skewer to make room for more fruit.
4.  Repeat with a white banana and then a red fruit until skewer is almost full (white-red-white-red-white...).
5.  Using spoon, put a dollop of marshmallow fluff on the end of the skewer.
6.  Dip fluff dollop into stars.
7.  Place finished firecracker kabob on plate.

* A large marshmallow, squeezed into a flame shape and then cutting off it's sides to expose the "sticky inside" that will adhere to the sprinkles can be substituted for the marshmallow fluff.

Not only is this an easy recipe to do, but it teaches the children how to pattern! And think of the counting skills involved!
