January 2010- "Snow Igloo Village" All recycled materials

Materials Needed:

Empty egg shell halves, or empty egg crates, cut apart into individual crate
Marker
Glue
Cotton or leftover polyester filler
Lid to Cool Whip container or clear plastic take out container

Directions:

Draw circles around egg or crate to form the "ice brick" layers
Draw vertical lines between the circles to create the individual "ice bricks."
Glue cotton or fill into the bottom of the clear container or the top of the lid container for "snow".
Pipe a little glue around the cut edge of the egg/crate; and put igloo down onto "snow".
Close lid if using the clear container.  This will look like the snow globes you see this time of year.
*You can grind a little sea salt into the container after the glue dries.  Re close the container, and it can be gently shaken to "snow" on the village.

This is a great bilateral activity.  If you are trying to teach a child to grade the amount of pressure they use, using real eggs is an excellent way to teach them.  Pushing too hard with the marker, or holding the egg to tight, will result in the egg cracking.

* To make a larger igloo village, use the bottom bowl parts of the Cool Whip containers as the igloo.  Turn it upside down and draw the lines on the bowl, just like the eggs.
