Craft of the Season- Winter 2011- Opposites Theme
With all the cold, snowy weather the USA has been having this winter it is an excellent time to discover OPPOSITES while we stay warm indoors! Opposites like hot/cold, rough/smooth, hard/soft. This season we collected various materials from the families, and created Opposite Collages!

Materials Needed:
Scraps of materials cut into small pieces
Scraps of burlap cut into small pieces
Scraps of ribbon and yarn cut into small pieces
Scraps of felt cut into small pieces.
Glue
Construction Paper
Scissors- if you want to refashion the scraps
Directions:
Take the scrap materials and lay out a design on the paper. Talk about the different characteristics of the scraps and how they are different or opposites. (burlap is rough, silk is smooth, rug yarn is rough, ribbon is smooth, etc).
Remove the design to the side of the paper.
Squeeze out glue where the scraps will go on the paper and place the scraps on top of the glue.
Continue gluing and placing the scraps on the paper until the design is finished.
Let picture dry and then hang.
This activity is great for tactile exploration, bilateral hand control, pinch grasp and sustained squeeze. It also works on perceptual motor position in space skills.
